TUTORIAL: Flat borders

 I often see quilts that have borders that do not lay flat.  This can happen by sewing on a border without first measuring the correct length.  

Here I will show you how I remove the extra fabric, and then finish the quilt so it will lay flat & square.  

If you haven't applied the borders yet, and want to see how to apply the correctly the first time, just scroll down a bit.

Here you can see how the body of the quilt is nice & flat, but the borders look wavy.  Laying your quilt out on a flat area will give you a good idea of how flat your borders are looking. 

I begin by removing the borders with a seam ripper. Here you can see I needed to take off the two outer borders on this quilt.

Now we will start re-applying the borders.  I am starting with the first two narrow borders.

Lay them on the middle of the quilt, to see how long they need to be to keep the quilt square. 

This picture shows how much extra fabric needs to be removed.  Cut these two borders at the same size as the body of the quilt.

Now take these trimmed borders, and pin them to the body of the quilt. Use plenty of pins if needed.  Sew these back on, easing in either the body of the quilt or the borders so they match up with each other at each end.  

Now repeat that process with the top & bottom borders.   Lay across the body of the quilt, trim to match, and pin in place to re-apply. 

Keep repeating this same process for as many borders as you need to add.  

You can use a water-soluble marker to mark the exact place to cut.

This quilt pattern is super cute, designed by Elizabeth Hartman, called Beehive.  The pattern cover showed zig-zaggy straight line quilting, and so I found a similar computerized pattern called "Brittle" by Lorien Quilting.

Trip Around the World quilt

I'm making this for myself out of t-shirt fabric.  It's fun to put the different colors together & use up things that would otherwise get thrown out.  

These are 4" squares, pieced with the standard 1/4" seam allowance.  The walking foot on my machine made piecing this a breeze, even though the fabric stretches.  

I plan on putting a border around it & finishing it by doing a tacking "X" stitch in the middle of each block.  The shirts would have needed to be interfaced if I was going to quilt it on the longarm.
